Need Ideas? Top 5 Places to Visit with your Kids this Fall

Posted on 06 October 2016

I can't help but love this season in New York.  Fall is my favorite time of year.  If you are in the Long Island/Queens area there are some fantastic places you can visit with the whole family this Fall.  This has really taken me on a trip down memory lane as I'm thinking about all of the places I've been with my kids throughout the years.  Even though they are twelve, this is still the season for apple picking, pumpkin picking, hayrides, and haunted houses.  It never gets old.

I was recently in the town bagel place and I saw a friend that was getting food for their trip to go apple picking.  Her one daughter is off to college next year and the younger one is in middle school and she says they all happened to have a free Sunday (miracle nowadays) and they decided to go apple picking and to one of my favorite places - Lewin Farms.

5. Pick your Own Apples at Lewin Farms

We went to LEWIN FARMS last year when my sister and her family were visiting from California.  It is located in Calverton, NY.

The cool thing about the farm is that the trees in the orchard are a perfect height for kids.  They just reach up and pick fresh, delicious apples and fill up their baskets all by themselves.

They have separate rows for different kinds of apples so you can get a variety.  It's so easy!  You pick up a basket on the way in and fill it with as many apples as you want.  They weigh it for you on the way out and you pay for whatever you picked and pack it right in the car.  What's really cool is that they have fruits and vegetables to pick throughout the year depending on the season and you are getting locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables at a low price. It is also very educational for the kids.

4. Best Pumpkins - Queens County Farm Museum

The QUEENS COUNTY FARM MUSEUM is a favorite for Maria.  She has been to this one a bunch of times with Sophia and gets the greatest pumpkins every year.

The Queens County Farm Museum is a historical landmark. This 47-acre tract of farmland represents a 300-year history of agriculture and farming as a way of life and livelihood in Queens County. The historic buildings, farmhouse, orchard, planting fields, vineyard, herb garden, and farmyard animals bring history to life for urban visitors. The farm animals and peaceful environment give you an opportunity to leave your hectic daily life without actually leaving the city. They also boast a maize maze, pumpkin patch, sheep shearing, haunted house and a spectacular children's fall festival on Halloween weekend.

3. Hayrides at Hicks Nurseries

HICKS NURSERIES, is another local must visit anytime of year.  It's also very close to me in Westbury, NY.  I make my way over to Hicks at least three times a year for plants, outdoor decor, and holiday decorations.  It is our favorite place to go to get our Halloween decorations and while you're there you can get yourself a tub of popcorn and enjoy a hayride with some really cool exhibits.  We used to always get fun fall stuff like scarecrows, hay and pumpkins for the front of our house.  This year we decided to go a little scary and get some skeletons that we hung from trees and my daughter wanted our lawn to look like a graveyard so we added some tombstones and bones - all in good fun.

2. Rise of the Jack O'Lanterns

One of the coolest things I have ever experienced during Halloween has been the RISE OF THE JACK O'LANTERNS AT OLD WESTBURY GARDENS.  Over 5,000 hand-carved Jack O'Lanterns light up the night at Long Island's most treasured historic mansion!  It features the work of dozens of local artists and sculptors in a unique walk-through experience and it's great for all ages.  You do have to get tickets in advance.  When we went it was a bit of a stormy night and it just added to the effect.  You are literally walking the grounds of a mansion, following the path of over 5,000 carved jack-o-lanterns.  The designs are so unique, you will not believe it.  Definitely a must experience!

1. Don't Get Lost in the Corn Maze at Schmitt Family Farm

When they were younger, an all time favorite was F&W SCHMITT FAMILY FARM.There is so much to do here and it's all very organized and easy to experience with the kids.  You can pick your own pumpkins, go on rides and slides, walk through the haunted mansion, and run through the 7 acre corn maze.  This is what sticks out for me the most.  I remember them running through the corn maze trying to find the items on the scavenger hunt and working as a family to figure the way out - so much fun.  There are also hayrides, pony rides and a petting zoo.  Like I said, it is all very organized and able to be done in just a few hours and right in Melville, NY.

Halloween is a really fun holiday in the Fall and local merchants really make it worthwhile to visit so you can spend quality time with your family.  Let's face it, we live in a digital world so I say embrace any activities that will get you and your family outdoors and closer to appreciating nature. It allows you to have a blast while building those life-long memories.  I know it has for me.
