3 Ways to De-stress During the Holidays

Posted on 19 December 2017

This time of year gets to the best of us! So many things to accomplish before the end of the year, hosting preparations, holiday parties to attend, travel plans to be made and not to mention all of the holiday shopping that is well under way .. or not. I know I am living on daily lists this time of year - even more than usual.

I have done something different this year which I normally never do.  I have carved out much needed time for ME!  Let's face it, everywhere we turn we are constantly being reminded of our wellness and promoting our emotional, physical and spiritual wellness. Being unusually busy this season with pop-up events, ladies shopping nights and order fulfilling has been awesome but has also been physically and emotionally exhausting.

Instead of just plowing ahead and waiting until after the holidays to relax I have given myself relaxing and reflecting time during the week to help me enjoy and embrace this busy time of year along with the hustling. Three ways that have worked for me lately is practicing yoga, visiting a salt cave and diffusing essential oils.

1. Om Sweet Om

I have practiced yoga on and off for the past 20 years but always seem to give up because of how inflexible I am.  I also notice that as I get older it's getting harder and harder but it's something that my body really needs. Playing tennis during the week is also something I really enjoy and in order to stay flexible and keep my muscles soft and limber, yoga has become a great balance.

Om Sweet Om is a really special place in town.  Their intention is for the studio to be a home for the community and where everyone can find their own place of comfort with their practice.  They have a number of rooms in the studio where classes take place and a very educated and qualified staff with a plethora of classes and times to choose from.  There really is no excuse.

One thing I have always enjoyed about yoga is leaving with a message at the end of class.  Each class opens with an intention and something to keep in mind for the remainder of the class and hopefully then into your daily life.  There truly is a place for everyone and their stage of practice, whatever that may be.

I have found it truly calming and peaceful this time of year to set aside the busy schedule for that 60-90 minutes and focus on my mind, spirit and body.

2. Port Salt Cave

Yes that's what I said a SALT CAVE!  This is another special place in town that just opened up about a month ago and I had to try it out.  Needless to say I have been back a few times.

It is a cave completely made of salt - the walls, floor and ceiling,  There's also the sound of calming waterfalls in the background with dim lighting.  You book a 45 minute session and you just go and sit in the cave on a lounge chair while they wrap you in blankets.  Sounds like heaven right?

While you're enjoying the solitude and calm, there is a mist flowing through the room that you breathe in.  At Port Salt Cave they use therapeutic salt imported from Poland. The philosophy is that negatively charged ions in salt may improve respiratory conditions including, but not limited to asthma, COPD, allergies, and sinus infections. As a natural disinfectant, salt is antimicrobial, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.

What's cool is that anyone can enjoy the benefits of the salt cave, even kids.  Salt Therapy has been shown to remove toxicity from the respiratory system. The inhalation of dry salt aerosol provided via a halogenerator provides relief in mucous build-up throughout the respiratory tract. This is how Halotherapy (also known as dry salt therapy) has shown to be effective.

It's a great way to relax and do something really good for your body especially with cold and flu season in full swing.

3. Young Living Essential Oils

A good friend of mine became hooked on essential oils and can tell you what dozens of oils are good for, which blends are the best for any ailment that you have and which ones will make your house smell amazing. Naturally, I became hooked myself.

First, you need the diffuser....

It has become a daily ritual, after I drop the kids off at school, to diffuse different oils depending on my mood and it has had this amazing calming effect and sense of peace when I do - a definite must during this holiday season.

Lemon and Peppermint together make you feel completely energized and ready for any kind of day you have planned.

Lavender is just one of the most beautiful and calming scents and Stress Away is one of their blends and does exactly that.

I put different oils in my bath, like Pan Away for example, whenever I get a chance to take one of those, and it's great for aches and pains.  I also like to diffuse Frankincense when I need a little spiritual boost this time of year.

(Lavender Farm in France)

What is sort of special about Young Living is that they have their own farms, all over the world actually, where they grow all of the plants that produce these essential oils and it's their unique process of seed to seal that sets them apart from other companies selling essential oils.

So as we rush around this holiday season trying to get everything done consider carving out a little wellness time for yourself.  I guarantee it will be worth it.

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Yeah, there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Let it Be.... The Beatles

YES! I set aside some me-time, too, during these past few weeks, but I haven’t tried a Salt Cave. Sign me up for the next visit!
